January 4, 2010 – The Light Brigade announces a new four-day technical training course, Fiber Optics for Utilities. This course was specifically developed to help the power utility address their training needs to increase deployment speed and reduce operation costs by improving the fiber optic technology skills of their personnel.
Fiber optic communications is becoming increasingly important in power utilities as Smart Grid technology increases the demand for bandwidth in the telemetry and control (SCADA) of the modern power network infrastructure. This comprehensive course focuses on the specific challenges of designing and installing aerial and underground fiber optic networks in power utility transmission and distribution rights-of-way. The content emphasizes fiber optic cable technology alternatives such as Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) and Wrap cable to address the application and installation requirements unique to the power utility environment.
Specific topics covered include:
- Fiber optic transmission theory
- ADSS, OPGW and Wrap optical cables
- Cable preparation and installation
- Splicing and cable management
- Installation practices for ADSS and OPGW cable
- Optical testing and troubleshooting
- Restoration for aerial and underground networks
- System design
This course includes two days of hands-on exposure to cable handling and installation, cable preparation, closure preparation, splicing, OTDR testing, and optical loss testing.
